Set a monthly, weekly or daily usage threshold (or all three!)

Why This Matters To You As a Madison Resident:
In 2015, Madison’s annual water use made headlines nationwide when it dropped below 10 billion gallons for the first time in 47 years. This was quite an impressive report. In 2016, water use was down again — 1.3 percent from the year before. Madison Water Utility pumped 9.85 billion gallons of water to homes, schools and businesses across the city in 2016, that’s 129 million gallons less than 2015.
Almost half of the drop comes from the upcoming closure of Madison’s Oscar Mayer plant, which has long been the biggest water user in the city. Last year, the plant used 285.5 million gallons of water, which is about 62 million gallons less than it used 2015. Madison Water Utility expects the plant to only use about 50 million gallons of water in 2017 before production ceases in the spring.
Madison Water Utility is the first in Wisconsin to allow customers to view their monthly, daily, even hourly water use online. Tracking your water use can help you catch plumbing leaks and spot inefficient appliances and fixtures like old water softeners, washing machines and toilets. If you have an older toilet, consider taking advantage of our toilet rebate program to replace it with a high-efficiency model.
Saving water saves energy. It takes an enormous amount of energy to pump water from the ground and then pump it again to homes and businesses across Madison. We pump more than 8 tons of water from the aquifer every minute at every operating well across the city. Take a look at some of our conservation tips to see how you can conserve, and learn how to spot leaks in your home.
