Response to COVID-19 – 3/13/2020, 4:10 p.m.
In response to the growing COVID-19 outbreak, Madison Water Utility will be closing its offices to the public beginning Monday, March 16, until further notice. The change is intended to help protect the critical employees who operate and maintain our city’s water system.
Both the Madison Water Utility Administrative Office (119 East Olin Ave.) and Operations Center (110 South Paterson St.) have outside drop boxes where customers can leave Municipal Service Bill payments. In-person payments will not be accepted for the time-being.
There have been some concerns about the availability and safety of tap water during the COVID-19 outbreak. This virus is not known to be a waterborne pathogen, and people can continue to use tap water as they normally would–for drinking, handwashing, cooking, etc. According to the EPA, COVID-19 is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection, and standard treatment and disinfectant processes are expected to be effective. Madison Water Utility always adds a small amount of chlorine to disinfect all the water pumped through our system.
Tap water availability
Madison Water Utility has a Continuity of Operations Plan that outlines our essential functions and provides guidance on response during emergencies. First and foremost, our essential function is to provide safe water for daily needs and fire protection. Our emergency planning helps ensure we always have enough trained staff to keep the water running, even in times of widespread illness.
Non-payment Policy
Madison Water Utility never disconnects people because of unpaid bills, but that’s not the case for all utilities. We applaud the decision from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to suspend all utility shut-offs during this public health emergency.
